About eSIM

An eSIM ( embedded SIM ) is the digital evolution of the traditional physical SIM. It is a small chip that comes pre-installed as standard in a wide range of electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and laptops. Unlike its plastic predecessor, the eSIM is not removable, but is programmed remotely to connect the device to a mobile operator’s network.

In essence, the eSIM performs the same function as a conventional SIM: authenticating a user’s identity to enable them to access the voice, text messaging and data services of their mobile plan. However, its digital nature gives it significantly greater flexibility and convenience.

How does an eSIM work?

The operation of an eSIM is based on downloading an “operator profile” directly to the device. This process, which replaces the need to insert a physical card, is generally performed as follows:

  1. Obtaining a QR Code: When signing up for a plan from an eSIM-compatible carrier, the user receives a QR code. This code contains the necessary information to configure the operator’s profile on the device.
  2. Scanning and Activation: Through the network settings or the device’s camera, the user scans the QR code. The device’s operating system downloads and activates the eSIM profile.
  3. Network Connection: Once the profile is activated, the device connects to the operator’s network in the same way as it would with a physical SIM.

This process allows you to activate a mobile plan in a matter of minutes, without the need to visit a physical store or wait for a SIM card to be delivered.

Key Advantages of eSIM Technology

The adoption of eSIM offers multiple benefits for both users and device manufacturers:

  • Flexibility and Multiple Lines: A device with eSIM can store several operator profiles simultaneously. This allows, for example, to have a personal and a work line on the same phone, or to subscribe to a local data plan when traveling abroad without having to change the main SIM card.
  • Increased Security: Because it is embedded in the device, an eSIM cannot be physically removed in the event of theft or loss of the terminal, making it difficult for unauthorized use and easier to locate the device.
  • Easy Operator Switching: Switching mobile service providers is a much simpler process, as it only requires the download of a new eSIM profile, eliminating the need to obtain and change a physical card.
  • Environmental Sustainability: The elimination of plastic SIM cards contributes to the reduction of waste and the reduction of the carbon footprint associated with their production and distribution.
  • More Compact Device Design: By eliminating the SIM card slot, manufacturers have more internal space in devices, which can be leveraged to incorporate other components or to create thinner, water-resistant designs.

Guide to Setting up your eSIM on Popular Devices

The eSIM (or embedded SIM) allows you to activate a cell phone plan from your operator without the need to use a physical SIM card. Setup is a quick and easy digital process. Here’s how to do it on the main phones on the market.

Before You Begin: General Requirements

Before starting the configuration, make sure that you comply with the following points:

  1. Compatible Device: Confirm your phone model supports eSIM technology. Generally, high-end models manufactured from 2018 onwards include it.
  2. Operator with eSIM support: Your phone company (Claro, Altice, Viva, etc.) should offer eSIM plans.
  3. Wi-Fi connection: You will need a stable internet connection to download the eSIM profile to your device.
  4. QR Code or Activation Data: Your operator will provide you with a QR code or, in some cases, ask you to download their application to start the process. Keep this code handy (printed or on another screen).

Main Method: Scanning a QR Code

This is the most common method and works very similarly on all devices.

  1. Contact your operator: Request the activation of a line with eSIM. They will send you an email or a document with a QR code.
  2. Open the settings on your phone.
  3. Look for the option to add a mobile plan.
  4. Scan the QR code: Point your phone’s camera at the QR code provided by your carrier.
  5. Follow the instructions: The phone will detect the plan and guide you through a few steps to confirm and add the new line.

Configuration on iPhone (iOS)

iPhones offer a very intuitive process for adding an eSIM.

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular Network (or Mobile Data).
  2. Tap on Add eSIM or Add cellular plan.
  3. Select Use QR code.
    • Alternative (Quick Transfer): If your carrier allows it and you have your old iPhone nearby, you can transfer the eSIM directly without a QR code by selecting the option to transfer from a nearby iPhone.
  4. Point your iPhone camera at the QR code provided by your carrier.
  5. When the Cell Plan Detected notification appears, touch it and then press Continue.
  6. Follow the on-screen steps to complete the activation. You will be able to label your new line (e.g. “Personal” or “Work”) and choose which one you will use as default for voice and data.

Configuration on Samsung Galaxy Phones (Android)

The process on Samsung devices is just as simple.

  1. Go to Settings > Connections.
  2. Log in to the SIM Manager.
  3. Tap the + Add eSIM option.
  4. The phone will search for carrier plans automatically. If it doesn’t find yours, select Scan QR code from carrier.
  5. Focus the camera on the QR code provided.
  6. Once detected, press Add. The phone will download and activate the plan.
  7. You will be able to manage your SIMs (physical and eSIM) from the SIM Manager to decide which one to use for calls, messages and data.

Configuration on Google Pixel Phones (Pure Android)

Google Pixels also make it easy to activate eSIM.

  1. Open the Settings application on your phone.
  2. Go to Networks and Internet.
  3. Tap the + sign next to SIMs (or Mobile Network).
  4. On the next screen, select Do you want to download a SIM? or Add a SIM.
  5. You will be given the option to scan a QR code. Point the camera at the code.
  6. Once the plan is recognized, click Download or Activate to have the profile installed on your Pixel.
  7. Follow the prompts to set up your new line preferences.

Final Considerations

  • Dual SIM: Most compatible phones will allow you to use a physical SIM and an eSIM at the same time (or even two eSIMs on newer models). This is ideal for having two numbers on one device.
  • Travel: eSIM is perfect for traveling. You can purchase a data plan from a local carrier at your destination and easily activate it without having to search for and purchase a physical SIM card.
  • If it doesn’t work: If you have trouble scanning the QR code, most devices offer an option to “Enter details manually”. Your carrier should provide you with this activation information. If the problem persists, contact your carrier’s technical support.

At Simlimites, we are committed to providing high quality and reliable service. Our international eSIMs are designed to operate smoothly, but in exceptional cases where technical problems attributable to our company or our service providers occur, our customers may request a full or partial refund, as set forth in the terms described below.

Payment and Refund Policy at Simlimites

General terms:

  • This refund policy applies exclusively to eSIMs purchased directly from our official website: simlimites.com.
  • Simlimites reserves the right to deduct administrative costs associated with the reimbursement process.
  • The response time for a refund request is 5 to 8 business days. Once approved, the refund of the agreed amount will be made through the same payment method used in the purchase. The time for this to be reflected in the account is 30 working days, this will depend on the policies of each bank.
  • The customer must report any technical failure at the time it occurs and allow our support team to perform the corresponding diagnosis.

When am I entitled to a refund?

A full or partial refund will be applicable only in the following situations:

  • If the eSIM does not work due to a technical problem and, after requesting assistance and receiving support, the problem persists, a full or partial refund will be granted, depending on the issue.
  • In the event that the eSIM fails to connect to the Internet or to work at any time, requests assistance, receives support but still the eSIM continues to fail connectivity, the company will be able to provide a full refund, except for a small administrative fee.
  • If the eSIM suddenly stopped working or only operated for a few days, the customer must report the problem immediately and request technical assistance. If, after receiving support, the problem persists and cannot be solved, a partial refund will be granted, proportional to the time the service was unavailable. In this case, the days in which the eSIM worked properly will be deducted from the refund.
  • If a customer receives a charge for an incorrect amount and presents evidence of this, he/she must notify Simlimites within 12 business days of receipt of the invoice. The company will evaluate the case and proceed with the correction of the amount if appropriate.

Why won’t I receive a refund?

A refund will not be approved in the following situations:

  • When a request to change the eSIM activation date is rejected. It is reminded that the customer has the right to change the activation date up to 48 hours before the date initially set for the plan to be activated. If this process is carried out after the established period, no refund will be applied.
  • If the user does not have the necessary time to allow the support team to diagnose the situation and consequently provide a solution.
  • If the client does not report the problem at the time of check-in and only reports it after the end of the trip, no refund will be granted.
  • There will be no refund if the eSIM does not work due to:
    • Incompatibility of the device with eSIM technology. A list of compatible devices is available on our website.
    • Carrier Restriction: If the device is locked by the carrier and does not allow the use of a different eSIM.
    • Device origin: Some devices of Asian origin (China, Macao, Hong Kong) may not have the option to add eSIM, which is the responsibility of the user to verify before purchase.
  • There will be no refund if the eSIM is penalized by the service provider due to:
    • Attempt to share data when the plan does not allow it.
    • Violation of the service’s fair use policy.
  • If a wrong email address is provided during the purchase process, no refund will be possible. If desired, the eSIM can be forwarded to a different email address, although it cannot be guaranteed that the creditor of the wrong email address will not use it, which would make a refund impossible.
  • If the customer no longer wishes to use the eSIM or changes his/her mind after the purchase, no refund will be made.
  • If the device status changes to “blacklisted” after purchasing the eSIM, no refund will be applied.
  • The company reserves the right to process refunds for cases that are not described in this policy. Simlimites reserves the right to modify this policy at any time and without prior notice.

Fraudulent purchases: Simlimites reserves the right to refuse any type of refund if there is evidence of abuse, violation of our terms and conditions or any fraudulent activity related to the use of the company’s products and services.
